el hiyab-le hijab-the hijab

¡Profeta!

"O Prophet! Enjoin your wives, your daughters, and the wives of true believers that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad) That is most convenient, that they may be distinguished and not be harassed. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

Al-Ahzab 33:58-59

...hermana...
¡ESO NO ES HIYAB!

To me, hijab is not just a piece of cloth -- it is an idea and a complete way of life. It is not just about covering ones hair, it is about concealing and protecting ones awrah - ones dignity - and it is about revealing ones true persona.

The hijab has become completely essentialized through the media, and has been reduced to a piece of fabric, by which everyone defines a Muslim woman. It is a buzz word, everyone thinks they know inside and out, and everyone feels the need to talk and debate about. However, in the process, they have transformed the meaning of hijab completely. Hijab, today, means "veil". Hijab today is about fashion and clothing -- it is no longer about proper adab, about modesty, humility, about dignity and a Muslim woman's identity.
